RORC Members' Reception | Karl Smith's Global Solo Challenge Campaign onboard Racing to End Parkinsons

On 12 October at 1830, members are invited for a drinks to learn about Irish Super Yacht Captain Karl Smith, and his personal mission to raise 1M Euro for Parkinsons Charites by the time he has completed the 2027 Single Handed non-stop Global Solo Challenge circumnavigation, aboard his Class40 #147.

Racing to End Parkinsons, starting from Vigo in October 2027. Karl’s father, Peter Smith, is living with Parkinson's disease, and is Karl’s inspiration and determination behind Racing to End Parkinsons.

As mentioned in the October newsletter, In the build-up to the Global Solo Challenge, Racing to End Parkinsons will compete in the 2027 RORC Transatlantic Race and the RORC Caribbean 600 with RORC member David Rowen. After the 600 Karl will then sail single handed back to Europe.

During the evening, Karl will be available to discuss the opportunities available for supporters and sponsors to become involved; including specific race sponsorship opportunities, where race sponsors will have the opportunity to nominate a crew member for the RORC Transatlantic Race or the Caribbean 600. There remain two race sponsorships for the Transat and one for the 600, it would be fantastic if a sponsor (or group of members) would nominate the RORC Griffin Team to select the sailors for these races onboard Racing to End Parkinsons, giving RORC Griffins the fantastic opportunity to ocean race in a crew of four onboard a Class40.

We are delighted to announce that Atelier 448 has become the first race sponsor of the yacht Racing to End Parkinsons for her Caribbean 600 entry. The creator and owner of Atelier 448, Andie, will be joining us on the evening.

The campaign also is seeking a Main Sponsor for the Global Solo Challenge, to cover the costs of getting the boat through the nonstop solo circumnavigation. The boat sponsorship will enable Racing to End Parkinsons to raise awareness and generate support for Parkinson's charities and bring international attention to the search for a cure. While the boat is racing it carries Parkinson Charities livery and all the social media will be targeted to maximise public interest and donations directly to Parkinsons charities around the world, to reach the 1M Euro target.

Representatives from Cure Parkinson's and Parkinson's UK will be attending the event. Donations can be made directly to the charities through their own go fund me links at the bottom of this note. Please feel pass on these links within your own networks and start the journey to the 1M Euros.

In addition to the main boat sponsor packages - there is a Friends of Racing to End Parkinson’s which is a wall of friends' names on the cockpit bulkhead, who will accompany Karl around the globe with Karl—each ‘brick’ of the wall is €500 and ‘Friends’ are welcome to take one or as many boxes as they would like. You can sign up to the ‘bulkhead’ on the night!

The mission of the campaign is raising the 1M Euro for Parkinsons charities—every donation helps support research into better treatments and a cure for Parkinson’s. Further information on the project and how you can make a donation can be accessed here.
