Sailors from all three RORC Griffin teams came together in the Solent on the 29th and 30th of March for an intensive weekend of training.

The mixed crew format allowed participants to share experiences and build connections across teams. The weekend was made even more valuable by the presence of world-class skipper Ian Walker, who provided expert guidance throughout the on-water sessions.

Tactical Insights from the ‘Winning Tides’ Workshop

On Saturday evening, the Griffin sailors gathered at the RORC Cowes clubhouse for an in-depth ‘Winning Tides’ workshop, led by Graham Sunderland—author and creator of the Winning Tides resource. The session offered a detailed analysis of tidal flow at the Royal Yacht Squadron (RYS) start line, along with strategic tips for effective positioning during race starts.

Putting Knowledge into Practice

Sunday’s fleet training session, delivered by Fourth Cape, provided the perfect conditions for tactical development—15 to 17 knots of north-westerly wind combined with strong tidal flow. Eight boats took part, using lights and warning signals to simulate competitive race starts. Crews had the opportunity to refine their pre-start routines and starting techniques.

With Ian Walker onboard, Griffin sailors benefited from real-time coaching in manoeuvres, positioning, and looking beyond the start sequence. His insights added tremendous value to the session.

As the day progressed, the fleet responded well to the shifting line bias, showing noticeable improvements in performance from the first start to the final one—a clear reflection of the weekend’s effectiveness.

A Valuable Experience

The training weekend offered a fantastic blend of theory, practical application, and elite mentorship, equipping Griffin sailors with new tactical knowledge and confidence to take back to their individual teams.

A huge thank you to Ian Walker, Fourth Cape, and Graham Sunderland for their time and expertise.

The Griffin teams are now looking ahead to their next event: the TeamO Cowes to Weymouth Race. Fair winds to all those competing!
