RORC 2025 Griffin Offshore Pathway

March 2025 update | Cultivating RORC's Next Generation of Offshore Sailors

The Royal Ocean Racing Club’s (RORC) Griffin Offshore Pathway is designed to introduce sailors aged 18-30 to the realm of offshore sailing. This program offers a structured development framework, enabling participants to gain proficiency through hands-on experience.

In mid-January, the Griffin Squads convened at Hamble Yacht Services, marking the commencement of their 2025 training season. The newly acquired Griffin yacht, adorned in its fresh livery was gleaming in the clear cold weather, a testament to the meticulous efforts of Charles and the FourthCape team.

The initial training weekend encompassed yacht familiarisation, team-building exercises, and navigation training. Under the guidance of lead coach Hugh Brayshaw, the squads engaged in on-water activities.

The Dark Arts of Navigation

A pivotal component of modern sailing is the practical use of navigation software. The squads benefited from a session led by Rolex Fastnet winning navigator Tom Cheney, who introduced them to the fundamentals of Expedition software. This training covered the setup and management of polar data and GRIB files—essential tools for informed decision-making.

The Griffin yacht’s technological capabilities were enhanced by generous contributions: Gareth Edmondson, skipper of Insert Coin, donated a computer, and Nick White, the developer behind Expedition, provided a complimentary license for the software. Tom Cheney’s commitment to supporting the crews throughout the season ensures that they can maximize the software’s potential.

Forging Team work

Technical prowess alone doesn’t guarantee success, the Griffin program places a significant emphasis on team cohesion. Alan Olive from High Performance Coaching facilitated insightful sessions with each squad, delving into how individual personalities and core principles can enhance team performance.

These workshops allowed sailors to deepen their understanding of one another, fostering the creation of shared goals for the season. Given the confined quarters of a yacht and the challenges posed by sleep deprivation and competitive pressures, such alignment is crucial. The strategies imparted by Alan are anticipated to be invaluable to the Griffin teams.

Inspiration from an icon

The Griffin sailors had the privilege of engaging with Dee Caffari, a luminary in the sailing world. Dee’s achievements are monumental: she is the first woman to have sailed solo, non-stop, around the world in both directions.  Her narrative, from solo circumnavigations to leading international teams in the Volvo Ocean Race, served as a deep and meaningful source of inspiration.

Dee also shared insights into her latest endeavour, The Famous Project, which aims to highlight the ambitions, successes, and strengths of women globally.  This initiative not only underscores environmental commitments but also empowers women sailors to realise their dreams.

Community and Collaboration

The Griffin program thrives on the support of industry partners and the broader sailing community. Hamble Yacht Services has undertaken the care of the yacht, ensuring it remains in optimal condition. Safety is paramount; thus, Spinlock has supplied lifejackets, and Ocean Safety has provided essential safety gear, enabling the yacht to meet RORC race requirements.

The Griffin program is open to further assistance. Currently, there is a need for a B&G 2020 mast display to replace a malfunctioning unit. Members or organizations with such equipment are encouraged to contribute, enhancing the yacht’s operational capabilities. Efforts are underway to register Griffin as a charity, which will offer additional tax benefits to donors and the organization alike.

Anticipation for Intensive Training

Looking ahead, all three squads are scheduled for an intensive four-day on-water training session. The program is fortunate to have access to Bellino and Redeye, alongside Griffin, providing diverse platforms for skill development. With the support of world-class coaches, the sailors are poised to refine their abilities.

Reflections from the Crew

The sailors have expressed profound appreciation for the comprehensive nature of the training. One participant noted, “The integration of technical navigation training with team-building exercises has been instrumental in boosting our confidence and cohesion as a crew.”

Another sailor highlighted the significance of the coaching sessions: “Understanding our individual strengths and how they contribute to the team’s dynamics has been enlightening. It’s clear that this program is about more than just sailing; it’s about personal and collective growth.”

Charting a Course Forward

The Griffin Offshore Pathway exemplifies RORC’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of offshore sailors. By providing a rounded training environment, encompassing technical skills, personal development, and inspirational mentorship. The program equips young sailors with the tools needed for success in the demanding world of offshore racing.

As the season unfolds, the experiences and lessons garnered from these training sessions will undoubtedly serve as a solid foundation. The synergy between the sailors, coaches, and supporters paints a promising picture for the future of the Griffin Squads, as they prepare to embark on competitive challenges with confidence and unity.
