In Memoriam: HM King Harald V 1937 – 2026
The Royal Ocean Racing Club is deeply saddened by the death of HM King Harald V, an Honorary Member of RORC and one of the most accomplished and respected sailing monarchs of modern times.
King Harald had an extraordinary association with the Club. He became a RORC member on 1 January 1950 at the tender age of 13 and remained closely connected with the Club and the sport of offshore racing throughout his life. As an Honorary Member, his association with RORC spanned more than 76 years.
Sailing was a lifelong passion for King Harald and he competed at the highest level of the sport. He represented Norway at three consecutive Olympic Games: Tokyo 1964, where he was also Norway's flag bearer at the Opening Ceremony, Mexico City 1968 and Munich 1972, racing in the 5.5 Metre and Soling classes.
His achievements extended far beyond the Olympic arena. Aboard Fram X, he became One Ton World Champion in 1987. For generations of RORC members, King Harald will be remembered particularly for his involvement in offshore and big-boat racing. The succession of yachts carrying the Fram name became a familiar sight on the international racing circuit and he competed during some of the great years of the Admiral's Cup. He raced Fram XII as owner and skipper of the Scandinavian team entry in 1995 and returned with Fram XIV in 1997.
His competitive sailing continued remarkably late in life. King Harald, at the age of 85, competed in the 2022 8 Metre World Championship in Geneva.
That longevity reflected something instantly recognisable to RORC sailors: a deep and enduring love of competition, the sea and the camaraderie created through sailing.
King Harald's membership also formed part of a remarkable connection between the Norwegian Royal Family and RORC. His father, Crown Prince Olav, accepted life honorary membership of the Club in 1942, while his grandfather, King Haakon VII, officially opened RORC's new home at 20 St James's Place, London, in July of that year.
King Harald combined the dignity of his position with the instincts and enthusiasm of a true racing sailor. His lifelong commitment to the sport, from Olympic competition to offshore racing and the international metre classes, earned enormous respect throughout the sailing world.
RORC extends its deepest condolences to HM Queen Sonja, the Norwegian Royal Family and the people of Norway.
The Club has lost a distinguished Honorary Member whose association with RORC stretched back to 1950, while the sport of sailing has lost one of its great ambassadors. HM King Harald V's contribution to sailing, and his lifelong passion for racing, will be remembered by RORC members with enormous respect and affection.
